Lelystad develops innovation hub for electric flying
Lelystad is taking the next step in sustainable and innovative logistics. An innovation campus for electric flying is being developed around Lelystad Airport, positioning the region as a national leader in sustainable aviation. A government contribution of €1.5 million will create a test and learning environment where new technologies for electric flying can be developed, tested and scaled up in practice.
Focusing on charging infrastructure, energy storage and smart energy systems, the campus aligns seamlessly with Flevoland’s broader ambitions of providing space for innovation, sustainable logistics and new business.
From airport to energy hub
One of the driving forces behind this development is NRG2fly, an innovative company building a European charging network for electric aircraft. In Lelystad, the largest charging station for electric aircraft in Europe has now been built. This will lay a new infrastructure for clean and quiet aviation.
According to NRG2fly, Lelystad offers a unique combination of facilities and space. Lelystad Airport has runways, terminal facilities and logistics infrastructure, but without the constraints of large, busy airports. “It is actually a mini-Schiphol, with every opportunity to test, grow and innovate,” said founder Merlijn van Vliet.
Its ambitions extend beyond aircraft. The innovation campus is working on making entire airports more sustainable: from electric aircraft to charging points for baggage trucks, maintenance vehicles and passenger buses. With this, Lelystad is developing into an energy hub of the future.
Opportunities for logistics entrepreneurs
For logistics entrepreneurs, this development underscores what Lelystad stands for: space to pioneer, test and scale up. The combination of sustainable energy, innovative infrastructure and strong cooperation between companies, government and knowledge institutions makes the region attractive for logistics and technology companies that want to move forward.
Horizon Flevoland supports NRG2fly both financially and strategically, bringing together entrepreneurs, investors and partners. Thus, innovations are not just plans, but are actually realized.
